Positive sales growth in this business, and we have improved profitability through cost-cutting measures. In the MRI contrast media market, we have a global market share of approximately 60%, and we aim to sustain this leadership and continue growth through pipeline products for new applications of MRI contrast media. In the medium to long term, we believe that a high growth opportunity exists in the area of innovative radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear medicine. In 1999, we entered this business by acquiring the U.S. research and development-oriented company Diatide. In April 2000, we acquired a majority share of the French company CIS bio international, which has a global distribution network and a leading position in the European radiopharmaceutical market. We plan to continue to develop this business through in-house research and development and in-licensing, and we intend to become a substantial player in the global radiopharmaceutical market. The area of oncological radiopharmaceuticals presents a particularly attractive opportunity given our existing expertise in oncology and the potential for synergies between our diagnostics and therapeutics businesses. Expand sales in the United States The United States is the world's largest individual pharmaceutical market, and this market constituted S 992 million of our net sales in 2000 and S 775 million of our net sales in 1999. We have targeted the United States market to account for 30% of our net sales by 2005, up from 21% in 1999. We expect that this growth will be achieved through increasing our presence in the areas of fertility control, hormone therapy, contrast media, radiopharmaceuticals, oncology, and dermatology. The recently launched hormonal contraception intrauterine delivery system Mirena and the expected launch of the oral contraceptive Yasmin, the continuous combined once weekly Climara ProTM transdermal patch as well as Campath, a treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia CLL ; , should drive sales growth in the United States. We are expanding our sales force in the United States in anticipation of the broadening of our product lines. Broaden our product lines sold in Japan Our future business expansion plans in Japan, the second largest individual pharmaceutical market in the world, primarily center on therapeutics. Our net sales in Japan in 2000 were S 670 million 15% of total net sales ; and in 1999 were S 454 million 12% of total net sales ; . Up through 2000, we have generated close to 71% of our Japanese net sales with diagnostic products. The remaining 29% relate to therapeutics, dermatology and some other smaller products. We have gained an additional marketing platform and research and development capacities through the acquisition of Mitsui Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in March 2000. Following the approval of oral contraceptives by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare in June 1999, we entered the highly promising Japanese oral contraceptive market in September 1999 by launching Triquilar. Our therapeutic product Betaferon, for the treatment of multiple sclerosis MS ; , was launched in Japan in November 2000. We are currently assessing how to further expand our therapeutics business with additional in-licenses and the globalization of selected products developed by Mitsui Pharmaceuticals. Build a global dermatology business We are committed to building a global dermatology business by entering the United States market and by strengthening our position in Europe. During 1999, net sales of dermatology products amounted to S 199 million 5% of total net sales ; . During 2000, net sales were S 221 million. We intend to achieve a substantial improvement in our share of the world market, with products both from our internal research and development efforts and from the innovative technologies we acquire. We made our first step to globalize this business and establish ourselves in the United States dermatology market by entering into a licensing agreement with DUSA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to.
America is experiencing a tidal wave of consumer interest in self-care and selfmedicating with over-thecounter OTC ; drugs. Approximately 73 percent of consumers prefer to treat themselves with OTC medication. About 5 months after Hurricanes Katrina Rita my husband Bob and I delivered homemade quilts from Lutheran Church Charities to the disaster camps and churches all down the Gulf Coast from Mobile, Alabama to New Orleans that were distributing aid to victims of the storms. Everyone was so appreciative and amazed at the lovely work which was done on them. One of the churches was St. John's in New Orleans and while there we attended their first Sunday Service since the storms. Afterwards one of the older members approached us and asked if she could have a green quilt that we had left there for them. We learned that she had lost everything in her home except a large chandelier. She had returned to her house the previous week to retrieve the fixture only to find that someone had stolen it in her absence. She told us at the time that "she needed something that someone had made with love". This week, after not hearing from her Hilda ; since making that quilt delivery, we received a letter from her which was very newsy and ended with "I enjoying the deep green quilt and think often of who made it". We often think that a person forget or ignore kindness, but at the age of 86 Hilda has not and will never forget.

And one meta-analysis of over 41, 000 patient records found that people who take statin drugs to lower their cholesterol as much as possible may have a higher risk of cancer, 7 while other studies have linked low cholesterol to Parkinson's disease. What cholesterol level is too low? Brace yourself. Probably any level much under 150 -- an optimum would be more like 200. Now I know what you are thinking: "But my doctor tells me my cholesterol needs to be under 200 to be healthy." Well let me enlighten you about how these cholesterol recommendations came to be. And I warn you, it is not a pretty story. Who Decided What Cholesterol Levels are Healthy or Harmful? In 2004, the U.S. government's National Cholesterol Education Program panel advised those at risk for heart disease to attempt to reduce their LDL cholesterol to specific, very low, levels. Before 2004, a 130-milligram LDL cholesterol level was considered healthy. The updated guidelines, however, recommended levels of less than 100, or even less than 70 for patients at very high risk. Keep in mind that these extremely low targets often require multiple cholesterollowering drugs to achieve. Fortunately, in 2006 a review in the Annals of Internal Medicine8 found that there is insufficient evidence to support the target numbers outlined by the panel. The authors of the review were unable to find research providing evidence that achieving a specific LDL target level was important in and of itself, and found that the studies attempting to do so suffered from major flaws. Several of the scientists who helped develop the guidelines even admitted that the scientific evidence supporting the less-than-70 recommendation was not very strong. So how did these excessively low cholesterol guidelines come about? and carafate.

Given the competitive history described above, the empirical exercise will be limited to the period beginning in August 1977 date of entry on the US market for the pioneer drug ; , and ending in May 1993 before Prilosec's rise to market dominance and Tagamet's imminent patent expiration ; . The rst H2 antagonist, Tagamet, was launched by SmithKline in 1977, and soon became one of the most popular prescription drug ever sold. Since then, three alternative H2 -blocker medications have entered the market: Zantac Glaxo ; in 1983, Peppcid Merck ; in 1986, and Axid Eli Lilly ; in 1988. A brief synthesis of the main product characteristics for these four drugs appears in Table I. The date for a speci c indication corresponds to the time of FDA approval. The dataset draws upon two distinct sources of information. First, product-level data on monthly sales, prices, advertising levels, and other product characteristics originates with the market research rm IMS Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ; and is discussed at greater length in Section 3.4.6 Second, product-level indices of clinical.

The duration of effect of famotidine I.V. 0.5 mg kg on gastric pH and acid suppression was shown in one study to be longer in pediatric patients 1 month of age than in older pediatric patients. This longer duration of gastric acid suppression is consistent with the decreased clearance in pediatric patients 3 months of age see Table 6 ; . INDICATIONS AND USAGE PEPCID is indicated in: 1. Short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcer. Most adult patients heal within 4 weeks; there is rarely reason to use PEPCID at full dosage for longer than 6 to 8 weeks. Studies have not assessed the safety of famotidine in uncomplicated active duodenal ulcer for periods of more than eight weeks. 2. Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer patients at reduced dosage after healing of an active ulcer. Controlled studies in adults have not extended beyond one year. 3. Short-term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer. Most adult patients heal within 6 weeks. Studies have not assessed the safety or efficacy of famotidine in uncomplicated active benign gastric ulcer for periods of more than 8 weeks. 4. Short-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD ; . PEPCID is indicated for shortterm treatment of patients with symptoms of GERD see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY IN ADULTS, Clinical Studies ; . PEPCID is also indicated for the short-term treatment of esophagitis due to GERD including erosive or ulcerative disease diagnosed by endoscopy see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY IN ADULTS, Clinical Studies ; . 5. Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions e.g., Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas ; see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY IN ADULTS, Clinical Studies ; . CONTRAINDICATIONS Hypersensitivity to any component of these products. Cross sensitivity in this class of compounds has been observed. Debiopharm Group The Debiopharm Group is a global biopharmaceutical development company headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. Debiopharm developed vapreotide acetate for the treatment of acute esophageal variceal bleeding. In September 2006 we acquired the exclusive right to sell, market and distribute vapreotide acetate in the United States. The agreement provides that Salix make milestone payments in an aggregate amount of up to .5 million to Debiopharm upon certain events prior to the commercial launch of the product, and quarterly royalty payments thereafter. As of December 31, 2007, ##TEXT##.5 million of milestone payments had been made. The remaining milestone payment is contingent upon achievement of regulatory approval. Because the milestone payment is conditioned upon events that might never occur, we do not consider the potential milestone payment as a purchase obligation nor a commitment to be reported in our contractual commitments table in Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations. Dr. Falk Pharma GmbH Pursuant to Salix's license agreement, as amended, with Dr. Falk Pharma GmbH, Salix acquired the rights to develop and market a granulated formulation of mesalamine. The agreement provides that Salix make milestone payments in an aggregate amount of up to .0 million to Dr. Falk upon certain events prior to the commercial launch of the product, and quarterly royalty payments thereafter. As of December 31, 2007, .0 million of milestone payments had been made. The majority of the remaining milestone payments are contingent upon filing a new drug application and achievement of regulatory approval. Because these milestone payments are conditioned upon events that might never occur, we do not consider the potential milestone payments as purchase obligations nor a commitment to be reported in our contractual commitments table in Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations. King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In June 2004, we acquired the exclusive right to sell Anusol-HC 2.5% hydrocortisone USP ; cream, Anusol-HC 25 mg hydrocortisone acetate ; rectal suppositories, Proctocort 1% hydrocortisone USP ; cream and Proctocort 30 mg hydrocortisone acetate ; rectal suppositories from King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. We paid .0 million cash for the four products, and entered into a supply agreement for the suppository products and the Anusol-HC cream product with King Pharmaceuticals; an alternate supply arrangement with a contract manufacturer was put in place for the Proctocort cream product. Once payment amounts under this and other supply agreements are known and are non-cancelable, Salix includes them in its contractual commitments table in Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations. Merck & Co., Inc. In February 2007, we entered into a Master Purchase and Sale and License Agreement with Merck & Co., Inc., to purchase the U.S. prescription pharmaceutical product rights to Pepcid Oral Suspension and Diuril Oral Suspension. Pursuant to the Master Purchase and Sale and License Agreement, Salix paid Merck .0 million at the closing of the transaction. In addition, Salix will make additional payments to Merck up to an aggregate of .0 million upon the achievement of certain annual gross sales targets for the acquired Pepcid Oral Suspension and Diuril Oral Suspension products during any of the five calendar years beginning in 2007 and ending in 2011. Because these payments are conditioned upon events that might never occur, we do not consider these payments as purchase obligations nor a commitment to be reported in our contractual commitments table in Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations. In return for these payments, Salix obtained 1 ; all rights to the United States regulatory approvals and related data, open purchase orders, inventory and customer lists related to the acquired oral suspension products, 2 ; an exclusive license to the Pepcid Oral Suspension and Diuril Oral Suspension trademarks for the use of prescription sale of the acquired oral suspension products in the U.S., and 3 ; an exclusive license to certain know-how related to the manufacture of the acquired oral suspension products in the U.S. Merck also agreed to manufacture and supply the acquired oral suspension products to Salix through December 31, 2008. In the event that Salix is acquired by another 8.
Nausea and Vomiting, and Eating Problems There are three main types of cancer-treatment related nausea, mostly associated with chemotherapy, but also sometimes with radiation therapy. Prevention and treatment strategies vary depending on which kind you might have: Anticipatory nausea: Often doctors prescribe benzodiazepines such as Ativan lorazepam ; or Valium diazepam ; to prevent anxiety and thus quell anticipation of nausea and vomiting. They might also suggest that you stop taking stomach-irritating pain relievers such as the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, and that you take an over-the-counter stomach-soothing drug such as Prilosec or Pepcid AC. Acute nausea and vomiting: The drugs of choice for treating acute chemo-related nausea and vomiting are the serotonin antagonists, which may be given orally or intravenously and include Zofran ondansetron ; , Anzemet dolasetron ; , Kytril granisetron ; and Aloxi palonosetron ; .Your doctor might also prescribe a dopamine antagonist such as Compazine prochlorperazine ; or Reglan metoclopramide ; , which work by keeping your brain from perceiving nausea. Delayed nausea and vomiting: Steroids are often prescribed for nausea and vomiting that occur two to five days after chemotherapy treatment because these drugs help soothe inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Emend aprepitant ; is an oral anti-nausea medication that can be taken the day of and for a couple of days after 3.
